the first 72 hours
The NICU staff told us early on that the first 72 hours were a very critical period. Those hours weren’t without their ups and downs, but Nolan made it through, and even closed it up on a high note! We’ll take every bit of good news we can get.
The primary concern of the day was Nolan’s CO2 exchange, which wasn’t good. There were some tricks with the ventilator that eventually led to an upturn with the CO2 situation. It’s not back to where they’d like it to be, but it’s not declining anymore, so we’re pleased with that.
There are other tests and evaluations ongoing always, but the good news is that there are many systems they can definitely say are doing well. Urine output is good, blood pressure is good…
They have had to draw blood for various tests over the last few days, and we’ve learned that even a small blood draw takes a lot of blood out of our pint-sized baby, who doesn’t have much to spare. They’ve had to do blood transfusions to keep the blood volume up (not unusual in this situation). As I understand it, an infant of this size has only about 10 teaspoons of blood in his body!

Dear Ronan and Kara and Nolan,
I am so happy to see the photo of your beautiful baby boy! You are all in my thoughts and prayers each and every day. I am always reminded of our connection when I’m in the kitchen cooking (just like at Penland!), especially last night when I used apple juice to marinate the tofu! Dear Kara and Ronan,
I love getting to know Nolan and am touched every day by his news. Thank you, Maria, for putting together this wonderful site. It should be award-winning! I have shared it with many friends and all are sending forth love and admiration for you all and for Nolan and his long potter’s fingers. I loved seeing him in his mother’s arms and those fingers clasping the big hand says it all, that he is very strong and much in love with his family.

Wow guys!!! CONGRATULAIONS on becoming parents!!! We think about you all everyday, and of course included in each prayer at this Davis house. Little Nolan takes our breath away… Kara, you have never looked more beautiful than in the kangaroo pose. Your touch, smell and sound are meeting needs for both of you. (I still cherish rocking Butler at night with his body conformed to mine.)Ronan, the first pictures we saw were of you and Nolan… those pictures make us question everything in life, while at the same time, know that someone has the answers to all the questions. We love you guys!!
