After our Denali tour, we headed back to Anchorage, with a brief stop in Talkeetna. It's a cute town, but I couldn't figure out what the point of it was, other than being a place for tourists to gather. I know that it's the main staging ground for climbers preparing for Denali, and it's rumored to be the model for Cicely in Northern Exposure.
Talkeetna is interesting because it's another one of those towns that, in another state, would be "more connected". When I first looked at the map, I thought it was just a couple of miles off the Parks Highway, but then Dad pointed out to me that the road that I thought went to Talkeetna actually stopped just short of the town, at the river. To get to the town, you have to take the 20 mile approach road from the south. I can't imagine the Army Corp of Engineers or whoever allowing a river to go unbridged in the Southeast!
I'm still not sure what is at the end of what I thought was the Talkeetna road...
In Anchorage, we dropped Mom & Dad off at the airport and picked up our replacement rental car, from an agency that didn't mind us driving on gravel roads. Adventures await!
