And finally, a large vegetable! Who is going to eat who?
The Alaska State Fair will be a week after we leave, so we'll miss it, but we did read a newspaper article about some of the large vegetables they expect to see. This summer has been hotter and drier than usual, so they've gotten some large hot-weather vegetables, which they don't usually see. There's a new world record cantaloupe in Palmer that weighs 64.8 lbs. (The last two world records have been set by NC cantaloupes!) There's also a 700 lb pumpkin in Homer. Past world record vegetables from Alaska have included: a 75.75 lb. rutabaga, 42.4 lb. kale, a 43.7 lb. kohlrabi, and a 63.3 lb. celery. I can't even begin to imagine a 63 pound celery. The cabbages are perennial monsters.
