We were lucky enough to be able to camp in three different environments on the trip. The first night at Pt. Nowell, we were just inside the trees in a beautiful mossy nook. It was hard to find an appropriate tree to hang our food from (to keep bears from it), though, so we were still trying to hang it and set up camp at midnight! Even in the woods, though, there was plenty of light to see by at that hour.
Pt. Nowell is an "orca rubbing beach" which, as I understand it, is a shallow beach where the orcas come in and rub their bellies. Maybe I am making that explanation up, but apparently it is a very special thing to be around because we had several different people mention it to us (only one and I would have thought maybe my leg was being pulled). I guess there aren't many orca rubbing beaches in the Sound. We didn't get to see any orca rubbing, sadly.
