Deb, patiently waiting for me to get in the kayak so we could go. The water was exceptionally clear, which made me feel like we were in a lake (again, I'm used to the NC ocean). Ten miles further down Dangerous Passage towards the glaciers, though, the water was a cool blue-green (storybook ocean color) and you couldn't see any distance through it. I've gotten different stories on why, but the most compelling came from a park ranger who said that it's algae bloom, which is fed by the minerals in the glaciers and the long days of sun in the summer. Regardless of what makes it that color, it's most definitely associated with the glaciers. Many of the glacial-fed rivers in Alaska have this color, too (and those that don't are silty brown from the glaciers).
Note the tank top that Deb is wearing. She wore one again the next day, but I don't think shoulders have made an appearance since. We were fabulously lucky in that our first four days in Alaska were sunny and warm.
